In Shipping, the Quality Outweighs the Cost

Dušan Jamný studied naval navigation in Poland, and maritime distances have become his fate. Upholding the Czechoslovak shipping tradition, he established Czechoslowak Ocean Shipping in 1999, a company that specialises in sea transport without owning any vessels. Additionally, he founded the Czech Antarctic Foundation, which supports scientific endeavours in Antarctica. His hobbies include yachting, with a particular interest in Antarctic yachting.

You are continuing the historical tradition of Czechoslovak shipping. What services do you provide today?
We have expanded on that foundation. Today, we have evolved into the leading universal Czech freight forwarding company capable of transporting any cargo to any location, from the Arctic to Antarctica, using rail, road, sea, and air. We operate eight branches across Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia, with an office located directly at Ruzyně airport. We have agents around the globe and collaborate with all major carriers.

Czech companies are heavily focused on exports, making the transportation of goods and products essential. Why should an exporter choose your services?
Transporting regular goods that are simply loaded and unloaded from a truck, train, or container can be done by anyone. However, managing complex logistics involving multiple modes of transport and carriers, special cargo, technology, and investment units requires the expertise of experienced freight forwarders like us. That is why we prioritise investing in skilled personnel. We have rejuvenated and expanded our team, making it more international, and the members complement each other excellently. For us, the client always comes first. Sometimes, our team understands the client’s needs better than the clients themselves. Our clients know and trust us, as we value service quality over price. We excel where others fail. In the transport industry, you need to be able to improvise. Cargo can freeze during transit, at transshipment points, or in customs warehouses, causing costs to rise. Those who choose solely based on price and work with freight forwarders that cannot resolve issues quickly and efficiently end up paying more. Each country, port, and transshipment point has its own regulations. Our extensive experience in navigating such challenges is invaluable. Our traders have a comprehensive understanding of available options, capacities, price trends, potential issues, and their solutions. We leverage economies of scale to our advantage. With transportation capacity being limited nowadays, every day we save on transportation costs benefits our clients and helps resolve production and trade challenges. As global transportation becomes increasingly complex, finding capacity, opportunities, favourable prices, and meeting deadlines becomes more challenging. This is where we excel. We also provide excellent ancillary services, including legal assistance, insurance, interactions with authorities, and customs declarations. Additionally, we offer payment terms to support our clients with financing.

Our pride – logistics for the Antarctic research station on James Ross Island.

You organise skipper courses for yachtsmen, charter yachts on the Adriatic, and arrange expeditions. Your passion extends beyond the sea to encompass polar landscapes. How did this interest develop?
My connection to sailing originates from my time at the maritime school in Szczecin, Poland. My interest in Antarctica began when we managed complex logistics and I personally assisted in the construction of the Czech scientific station there. We continue to provide logistical support, leveraging our contacts within the scientific and military communities in Chile and Argentina, which is crucial for our operations. Additionally, through the Czech Antarctic Foundation, which I co-founded, we support polar research. I return to Antarctica regularly. In 2015, I was part of the crew of the Polish yacht SELMA, which set a world yachting record. We sailed from Hobart, Australia, to Whale Bay in Antarctica, the southernmost point accessible by boat. Three months later, we reached Mar del Plata, Argentina. The journey was perilous at times, but it instilled in me a sense of confidence that I carry into both my personal life and business endeavours.

Thank you for the interview.
