The acronym ABB signifies not only the start of the alphabet but also the initiation of a collaboration aimed at creating cleaner, more efficient, and quieter rail transportation. Additionally, ABB engages in partnerships focused on implementing artificial intelligence and collaborates with universities on joint research and development projects. These topics were discussed with Vítězslav Lukáš, Board Member of ABB in the Czech Republic.
ABB and Škoda Group have formed a partnership focused on railway electrification. What impact will this collaboration have on rail transportation in the Czech Republic?
The collaboration between ABB and Škoda Group marks a significant advancement towards achieving sustainable rail transportation in the Czech Republic. The two companies are joining forces to provide new battery electric trains for Czech Railways featuring ABB’s state-of-theart PRO series traction batteries. This innovative technology will allow the trains to function efficiently on partially electrified routes, greatly
enhancing the environmental sustainability of rail transportation, particularly in regions where the infrastructure is not fully electrified.
The PRO series batteries are specifically engineered for optimal performance in battery electric multiple units (BEMUs), enabling trains to run efficiently on both electrified and non-electrified tracks. This capability enhances operational flexibility and reduces infrastructure costs. Consequently, this initiative will not only aid in lowering emissions in rail transportation but will also play a significant role in advancing modern and eco-friendly mobility solutions in the Czech Republic. Additionally, the long-term service agreement associated with this project guarantees sustainable operations and minimises downtime, thereby bolstering the reliability of the entire rail network.
In summary, this collaboration will help pave the way for cleaner, more efficient, and quieter rail transportation. This represents a significant move towards achieving an emission-free future for the Czech Republic.
