New Heat Sources, Electromobility, Energy Services for Modern Buildings, and the Development of Strategic Projects for the Coming Decade. The company Teplárny Brno (Brno Heating Plant) is currently undergoing a major transformation, moving beyond its traditional focus on district heating. CEO Petr Fajmon discusses how this transition is shaping the city’s growth and the broader energy ecosystem in Brno.
As Brno undergoes rapid expansion, new residential areas and commercial hubs are emerging across the city. How is the company Teplárny Brno contributing to this growth, and what benefits does connection to the district heating network bring?
Having evolved into a modern energy provider, Teplárny Brno now offers a diverse portfolio including heating, cooling, power, gas, and the e-mobility infrastructure. This comprehensive range allows us to partner with developers to create integrated, cohesive energy systems for entire new districts. Brno is growing rapidly, and energy is becoming one of the key issues right from the planning stage of new projects. We therefore work with developers from the very beginning, seeking solutions that will make sense not only today but also decades from now. Connection to the district heating network offers high reliability, comfort without the need to build one’s own sources, and greater cost stability. At the same time, it enables the use of modern low-emission energy sources, such as waste-to-energy, biomass or, in the future, heat from nuclear power. Ultimately, it is not just about heating buildings, but about infrastructure that enhances the value of the project and the quality of life in the city.
Teplárny Brno is currently developing electromobility as another component of the city’s energy system. Alongside public charging stations, charging hubs, and solutions for businesses, developers and municipal organisations are also being established. What role do you think e-mobility plays in Brno’s energy infrastructure, and where do you want to take this service in the coming years?
Electromobility is a natural part of modern urban energy systems. Teplárny Brno currently generates and supplies electricity, heat, and other energy services, so the development of the charging infrastructure is a logical step. We see it as part of the city’s broader transition towards cleaner and more efficient transport. We currently operate 145 public charging stations in Brno and are continuing to expand the network. In addition to the existing charging hub on Šumavská, we are preparing a new high-capacity hub at Červený mlýn, featuring 11 fast-charging stations. At the same time, we are developing infrastructure in locations where people are most likely to use it, such as around the Olympia and Galerie Vaňkovka shopping centres. Our ambition is to make charging as accessible as other energy services. By 2030, we aim to build at least 500 public charging stations in Brno and offer comprehensive solutions not only to households but also to businesses, developers, and municipal organisations. Our goal is to prepare Brno for the transition to zero-emission transportation, ensuring that electric mobility is accessible, user-friendly, and available to all residents under equitable conditions.
