Lubomír Kovařík, Vice President of the Czech Chamber of Commerce, explains how the modernisation of the Czech Armed Forces can be linked to the long-term development of the domestic defence industry, technological know-how, and skilled jobs.

How can we ensure that meeting NATO standards in 2026 also provides effective support and opportunities for Czech defence firms during the military’s modernisation?
If we want to strengthen the Czech Republic’s defence capabilities in the long term, we must view the domestic defence industry as an integral part of the state’s security system. The modernisation of the Czech Armed Forces should therefore not only provide new capabilities but also foster the development of Czech manufacturing capacity, technological know-how, and skilled jobs. It is crucial that Czech companies participate not only in the actual supply of equipment but also in its servicing, maintenance, modernisation, and further development throughout its entire life cycle. Equally important is reforming the procurement system. The current security environment is changing faster than ever before, and the state must be able to respond more flexibly to new technologies and innovations.
I consider agreement on a realistic multi-year procurement plan – one that meets the needs of the military and supports its long-term development – to be a strategic priority for 2026. Not only the armed forces but also the Czech defence industry need to be aware of such a strategy. Only with sufficient lead time can companies invest in new production capacities, technologies, employees, and the necessary certifications, and prepare for future contracts.
At the same time, it is necessary to support research, development, and innovation and to actively seek greater involvement of Czech companies in European and Alliance projects. The Czech defence industry should not merely be a subcontractor but a partner that contributes to the development of modern technologies and the strengthening of the Alliance’s overall defence capabilities.
That is why I consider it important to create a functional system that, over the long term, aligns the needs of the military, the state, and domestic industry while simultaneously strengthening national security and the competitiveness of the Czech economy.
