European Green Deal: Towards Clean Hydrogen

The European Green Deal (EGD) sets out a vision to reach climate neutrality in the EU by 2050. The main regulatory tool for achieving this target is the European Climate Law. However, the EGD includes a variety of both legislative as well as non-legislative initiatives.

A key area for the energy intensive industry sector is clean hydrogen. Last year, the European Commission (EC) published the EU Hydrogen Strategy that aims at producing up to 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen in the EU by 2030. This should enable EU member states to deploy mature hydrogen technologies on a large scale across energy-intensive industry sectors by 2050.

Viktor Chvátal, partner of the Brussels-based consultancy Nemec+Chvatal which specialises in the EGD, emphasises the EC’s role in providing the financial support: “It has been estimated that between EUR 500 – 900 billion will be required to meet the EC’s targets. The EU’s fi nancial aid will be further supported via the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance. Its objective is to develop an investment agenda to stimulate the roll-out of production and build a pipeline of projects. Additionally, the EC will support strategic investments in clean hydrogen in the context of recovery plans courtesy of the InvestEU programme. It is imperative that Czech industry is present at the decision-making table in Brussels to make sure it gets its slice of the cake.”
