Lowering emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy sources is essential for maintaining competitiveness, extending beyond just companies. We discussed with Martin Václavek, the General Manager of ČEZ Energo, s.r.o., about how these priorities are being implemented within the ČEZ ESCO Group.
As one of the largest operators of CHP units, what benefits does
cogeneration offer to your clients?
Cogeneration, which involves the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, is among the most efficient methods for utilising energy from fuels. In traditional power generation, a substantial amount of energy is wasted as heat. However, cogeneration captures this heat and repurposes it for heating buildings or industrial processes. This approach can achieve an overall efficiency of up to 90%, markedly higher than the typical 50–60% efficiency found in separate electricity and heat generation.
For our clients, this translates to substantial energy cost savings, as well as enhanced energy independence and security. Additionally, CHP units are versatile and can be tailored to meet specific client requirements, making them perfect for industrial plants, hospitals, hotels, blocks of flats, or district heating systems. Another advantage is the reduced carbon footprint, as CHP systems emit less CO₂ and other pollutants due to their more efficient fuel use. Lastly, CHP units can act as a backup energy source, which is especially crucial for buildings that need a consistent supply of heat and electricity.
Cogeneration plays a crucial role in the modern energy sector by enabling the efficient and cost-effective use of fuels for generating both electricity and heat. It is also flexible and can seamlessly integrate with renewable energy sources like biomass, biogas, sun, and wind.
The transformation of the heating industry is a major focus for your company, and the push for efficient and eco-friendly heat supply extends beyond just cities. Have you already undertaken projects in this area, or what are your future plans?
Transforming the heating industry is a top priority for us, and we have numerous successful projects that demonstrate our dedication to sustainable development. For instance, we have upgraded heating systems in various towns like Jablonec nad Nisou, Ivančice, and Prostějov by replacing old coal-fired boilers with modern gas-fired CHP units. This has not only lowered emissions but also enhanced the efficiency and reliability of heat supply to both residents and businesses. Additionally, our projects frequently integrate other energy sources such as solar panels or heat pumps, further boosting the system’s sustainability and efficiency.
Our future vision encompasses the continued advancement of cogeneration along with the implementation of new technologies aimed at decarbonising the heating industry. We are exploring the use of hydrogen as a fuel, which would enable us to produce heat and electricity with zero emissions. Additionally, a key component of our strategy involves utilising battery storage to manage energy peaks and integrating smart technologies to optimise real-time energy consumption. We aspire to lead in innovation and support the Czech Republic in meeting its emission reduction targets and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
