Female Leadership Plays a Vital and Enhancing Role in Today’s Society

We discussed the subject of female leadership with Olga Girstlová, the President of the Czech Management Association and a recipient of numerous awards for her entrepreneurial and managerial achievements. How does she view the roles of women as mothers, entrepreneurs, and managers in society?

The Czech Management Association frequently honours women in management with awards in the Manager of the Year competition. Do you notice any distinction between the roles of male and female managers?
Historically, managerial roles have been seen as masculine, leading to biases about a man’s capabilities and authority. In contrast, a woman in management might have encountered prejudices suggesting that women are less competent leaders and that their decisions are driven by emotion. Challenging these stereotypes is crucial. The assessment of managers, whether male or female, should be grounded in their skills, achievements, and their contributions to an organisation, regardless of gender. It is vital for companies to increasingly prioritise equality and diversity to create an inclusive work environment that is welcoming to everyone.

A manager is expected to lead a team effectively, devise strategies, communicate with various stakeholders, and meet the objectives of the company. Their competencies are often associated with analytical prowess, decision-making capacity, and the ability to resolve issues.

We also expect leadership and communication abilities, yet a female manager may enrich these with unique insights and skills such as empathy, teamwork, and the capability to forge strong interpersonal connections.

Given the rapid pace and heavy workload, there is an increased expectation placed on the capabilities of managers, indicating a need for greater personal leadership skills. What is your perspective on women in leadership roles?
Women frequently exhibit a greater sense of empathy and possess strong listening and communication skills. They understand the needs of their team better and can foster an environment where every member feels valued. Female leadership is often focused on development and growth, and it usually demonstrates a greater adaptability and openness to innovative methods. This adaptability is crucial in an ever-evolving world and contributes to enduring achievements and sustainable progress. Women in leadership roles also serve as inspirations for challenging and changing gender-based stereotypes.

It is essential to acknowledge that leadership by women is not superior or inferior to that by men. Each has its advantages and they can be mutually beneficial when combined.

Is the concept of female leadership merely theoretical, or do you intend to address it systemically?
The concept of female leadership goes beyond mere rhetoric; it requires systematic consideration and support. Female leadership is characterised by its emphasis on mentorship and collaboration, fostering teamwork that enhance collective intelligence and creativity in problem-solving. Women leaders tend to be notably flexible and adaptable, seeking stability and new opportunities amidst change, with a focus on long-term sustainability and a harmonious balance between professional and personal life. They are also adept at cultivating enduring relationships and establishing sustainable business practices.

The mission of the Czech Management Association is to promote the management profession and highlight its significance for the performance and sustainability of businesses that contribute to our country’s economic well-being. Recognising the value of female leadership, we aim to give it more attention, preparing systematic initiatives to share the experiences of women in leadership roles and acilitating the integration of their insights into the managerial world of men. This approach is underpinned by research indicating that diverse teams tend to achieve better results.
