The multinational company ROHDE & SCHWARZ, under the leadership of Pavel Šalanda (PŠ) in the Czech Republic, operates in various business sectors, including electronic test and measurement equipment, secure communication systems, cybersecurity, and network monitoring and testing, as well as broadcast and media. Petra Trojanová (PT) is in charge of developing a new product: a full-body security scanner.
Mr. Šalanda, many of us encounter manual inspections and metal detector screenings in high-security zones. What is the current state of metal detecting inspections, and what is their future?
Traditional screening methods like manual searches and standard metal detectors are insufficient in today’s complicated security environment. These conventional approaches are not only timeconsuming and intrusive but also limited in their ability to identify various concealed items. As industries like critical infrastructure and penal institutions face changing security threats, there is an urgent demand for more efficient solutions. The future of touchless security lies in millimetre wave (mmWave) scanners enhanced by artificial intelligence, marking a major leap forward in security screening technology. These systems are engineered to swiftly and accurately detect concealed items, improving both safety and operational efficiency.

Ms. Trojanová, is it possible for artificial intelligence to enhance operational efficiency and safety?
AI scanners streamline the detection process, enabling security teams to concentrate on security threats rather than performing extensive manual inspections. This transition not only enhances operational efficiency but also minimises the training needed.
When deploying advanced security technologies, addressing security and privacy issues is crucial. Millimetre wave scanners work at much lower power levels compared to standard devices like Wi-Fi routers and cell phones. These scanners can see through clothing but reflect off the skin, so they do not penetrate the body. The AI-driven software processes the reflected signals to identify and pinpoint concealed items, presenting the findings on a gender-neutral silhouette to safeguard personal privacy.
You are responsible for this new AI scanner. Explain its benefits to potential customers.
Rohde & Schwarz’s AI scanner technology utilises sophisticated neural networks designed to mimic human cognitive functions. This artificial intelligence continuously evaluates real-time signal reflections to spot anomalies that suggest concealed objects. After the neural network achieves a high degree of accuracy, the detection algorithm is finalised and incorporated into the scanner’s software, ready for operational use.
The main benefit of combining millimetre waves with artificial intelligence is its adaptability and capacity for learning.
Rohde & Schwarz’s security scanners equipped with artificial intelligence have established a new benchmark in security inspections by merging speed, precision, and flexibility. This technology offers an efficient solution for safeguarding individuals and assets. It is ideal for security managers across diverse sectors, including loss prevention and the critical infrastructure.
